In her debut memoir, I’m Not Death: I’m Not Deaf, Either—How My Hearing Loss and Bipolar Disorder Became Four Gifts, journalist Dacia Williams traces the childhood experiences that shaped her life with hearing loss and emerging bipolar disorder. A bilateral cochlear implant recipient who has survived repeated periods of suicidal ideation, Williams explores how humor and three other hard-won skills became what she calls the “four gifts” that helped her navigate adolescence, disability, mental illness, and survival.
